The wording of verses is irrelevant to the example given and left for us in the New Testament. Jesus and all the Apostles left a simple example by taking this literally. Peter is the only christian in the New Testament who physically fights. He was sternly rebuked by Christ. I don't think anyone likes this subject. It's easy to see how hard that life would be. I thought that was the point. I understand the desire to somehow explain this away, but it's ridiculous to do so. We are under a new covenant to the best of my understanding. The commands in the OT are irrelevant to the command and example put forth in the NT. Christians were not meant to run kingdoms if you even remotely read the New Testament in context. MLK Jr. certainly changed the world by taking it literally. Christians aren't changing the world for the better. Verses like this (and other) have to be reasoned to death to get where you want to go. It's easy to see that Jesus and all the Apostles expected the world to end much sooner than now. His teaching makes sense if you look at the Gospels expecting the end soon (in their lifetime). Christians aren't supposed to fight if you follow that book and stay consistent in interpretation. Christians seem to be taught that God would somehow expect them to live an enjoyable life, but that's no where to be found in the NT. We justify excess and nice vacations calling it Gods favor, when the whole of the NT seems to want us on a different course. God never said we would like or enjoy this stuff. Christ said we had to lose it all. For the love of all the honesty left in the world, don't give these cheap ways out. I don't believe this nonsense anymore, but explaining away hard verses like this is why both church attendance and biblical literacy are steadily tanking. Maybe biblical literalism might be a good ideas for you guys. Always remember Job the next time you think god owes you a good life. Think of Esau when you try and believe God loves you. This is Christianity 'lite".

This argument fails to understand "secularization" as a more advanced concept. It reduces religiosity to nothing more than identity proclamation. It merely counts the number of individuals who check a box identifying as Christian, or Muslim, etc. This may be part of a secularization hypothesis, but it fails to see secularization as a process which occurs within understandings of religion. Secularization should be understood as containing, or connected to, demystification which sees understandings of the world as changing with the growth of technology and education. To be a Christian today does not at all necessarily mean the same thing as being a Christian in the 18th, 16th, or 14th centuries. Today many people who identify as "Christians" will reject parts of a Christian narrative that was more universally accepted in the past. Belief in the real existence of Adam and Eve, and Noah's Flood, and the Genesis story of creation have declined substantially over time, and faith in God's immediate interactivity in the world has diminished as well. How many modern Christians believe that prayer can impact daily life events compared to Christians in the past, and how many of those who identify as "Christian" fail to participate in religious ceremonies and activities on a regular basis? All of this, beyond the mere statement of identity on a census form, is contained within the secularization process which has occurred over the recent centuries and continues to occur today. Because of this, and more, the hypothesis stated in this video fails completely. (Also, different statistics challenge even the assertion that the growth in religious identity is occurring in a manner similar to that described.)

The Catholic notion of Purgatory is the portion of the sanctification process that remains after the believer dies. And if this is not instantaneous, it makes sense that there is a special place in which this process finishes, as nothing impure can stand in God's presence in heaven.

Why would anyone care about the meandering imagination of a dead guy who lived a long time ago? He obviously didn’t know what the Bible says about the dead and sin or resurrection that all first century Christians understood clearly when Christ was teaching and setting things straight while he was on earth. Where in the Bible does it mention someone named Lewis? It doesn’t support religious philosophies at all.

Better to pay attention to what Jesus said about it, specifically the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus who went to starkly different destinies. One writhing in pain because of " These Flames," as The rich man stated, and Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham, the promise of salvation given to those who believed in their Creator, God. What else did Jesus teach about hell? Find out for your enlightenment and eternal safety.

I am Christian who believes in God. Me. I have faith there is an almighty. However, I personally believe the ten commandments was an insperation of man not God. Proof? Two of the commandments are suspect and i have never sccepted them. I also believe the U.S. Constitution is inspired by man based on God's desire that man have free will. The greatest faith is of free will. Freedom is God's will for man. So as an american citizen i have the right to freedom of religion AND freedom from a religion if i so chose.

I hear Wayne here saying a lot “I think”. In others words, “this is my opinion.” The early leaders in the church’s infancy where it exploded in growth was an emphasis on enemy love. The yeast of enemy love doctrine runs all throughout their sermons and letters and apologetics. Their emphasis on non violent love for neighbor AND enemy is so overwhelming it’s THE distinguishing mark of a Christian. Wayne forgets that in the garden, when Peter actually used the sword, Jesus rebukes him. Tertullian, a very early Christian leader, said that when our Lord disarmed Peter, he disarmed every soldier. Paul, likewise, when describing a Christian soldier’s weapons always differentiates a sword of the Spirit with the sword of this world. The NT emphasis on The God OF peace, love your enemy, overcome evil with good, pour out your life as Jesus, do good unto those who persecute you, do not avenge yourself but rather leave room for God’s wrath, he who says he loves God and hates another is a liar, raise your hands in prayer (contrasted with raising your hands in harm), peace on earth and goodwill towards men, the glad tidings of the gospel of peace, etc etc etc etc etc. To ignore the proactive love and nonresistance towards neighbor and enemy is to ignore the NT core and central teachings. Read the early church fathers and learn Christ. There were many disagreements in the early church just as there are today in almost every faith and practice, however, there was one nonnegotiable, LOVE. Love for God. Love for neighbor. But THE distinguishing mark of a Christian was Love for enemy. Grace and peace all. 😊

This is just one fatal flaw in hero worship. You can never know the internal workings of a persons mind with reliable certainty. This fact is ever more true the more distant that person is from you. Relying on a retelling, translated and edited multiple times over a millennium is clearly such a distance not only in time and place but in language and culture. Learning lessons from an example of what we consider good people is well and good but shaping your life to be obedient to how one person lives is foolish for exactly the reasons given in the OP. Selfish people will interpret the story to their own ends as will the political, the devote, the wise, the ignorant, and so on. No one it’s fully correct nor can they be but they certainly will act like they are while being sure to call out others for their perceived heresy. Never worship heroes. You will always be disappointed, not the least for the myths you create of them in your own mind.
